Legal Question in Criminal Law in India

My father has to stay in jail for 1.8 month under section 307 & 285...in a fake allegation by opposition party..my father fired in air but due to opposition 'setting with local police..it was converted to 307 due to some property case which is in father's favour by court...local DSP demanded 3 lacs to remove 307 section...now only case is only with 285 section...father has come out.now we want to file case of maan haani against opposition & get some compensation...guide us for the success of defamation case & compensation we can receive...normally how long defamation case run.regards vandana
