Legal Question in Family Law in India

The marriage of my friend's parents was intercaste marriage i.e. father belongs to Backward Classes and mother belongs to Scheduled Tribe Community. Their son i.e. my friend completed his studies in the name of his mother's caste as S.T. He is trying for a Govt. Job in S.T. reservation. Now some people are telling that he does not get S.T. reservation because his father is B.C. Was it true? He gets only father's caste?
