Legal Question in Business Law in Alabama

continuance

We are a small family business that filed a civil case against another corporation almost three years ago. The other company has unlimited resources and knew we were financially strained because we had invested almost $500,000. in material and labor on a government contract, they agreed to have cancelled for convenience. They had the trial date moved forward several times and now have accomplished what I am certain they intended from the beginning. We are no longer able to replenish retainers and our attorneys have resigned. Trial date is February 9, with several deadlines being January 9. We are trying to locate someone who will represent us on a contingency basis but we need to postpone these deadlines and trial date. Can I file a motion to continue myself? If so, could you tell me how to get started?

Re: continuance

You can file a continuance - just look at some of the other pleadings on file and copy the style. Simply state that you need to continue because your lawyers have withdrawn from the case. You may or may not get it. You may also be able to show up for the January 9 hearing and ask for the continuance in person. Where are you located? Email me, and I may be able to help you with finding an attorney.
