Legal Question in Medical Leave in Alabama

Family Medical Leave Act Update

I was at a seminar on Federal and State Laws last week, and I though that the instructor said that Family Medical Leave could be extended with the proper medical documentation. We are trying to redo our employee handbook, and this was a concern of mine. Thanks in advance for your help.---

Re: Family Medical Leave Act Update

FMLA requires that under certain conditions a covered employer must allow a covered employee to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. An employer may have a policy that allows for employees to take longer amounts of leave but it is not required to do so. What ever amount of leave your company does grant to its employees must be done in a non-discriminatory manner. Being from Florida I am not familar with your specific state laws on this issue which may or may not grant more rights to an employee than the FMLA does.
