Social Security child benefits

If you get back pay (child's benefits) in a disability hearing do you get it all the way back from the onset date from 18 on up to the age you are now?

Re: Social Security child benefits

Is this adult disabled child benefits, or strictly SSI? They are not the same.

SSI can only be paid back as far as the date the application is filed. Example: You filed for SSI in June, 2008. At your hearing, you are approved for benefits and the ALJ finds that you have been disabled since January 2007. Despite your onset date being in 2007, you are still only eligible for benefits back to the date on which you filed. On the other hand, if the ALJ finds that you have been disabled only since August, 2008 (2 months after you filed), you will only receive benefits from 8/08 forward, despite having filed in June, 2008.
