Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

I'm 41 year old low income State worker on sick leave from my seasonal job, should I file bankruptcy if I can't afford playing mounting hospital medical bills? This year, I've suffer from diabetic complication so I had to have 3 and maybe more diabetic laser eye surgery for retinopathy and an infected diabetic ulcer that lead to toe amputation. My job doesn't give me health insurance but I do pay out of my pocket for California high risk insurance $289.00 per month. I can't afford to pay these bills.
