Re: Bankruptcy

The case number is generally written YY-bk-XXXXX (ZZZ) (more formally expressed as AA:YY-bk-XXXXX (ZZZ)) where YY is the two-digit year in which the petition was filed, XXXXX is a number that may have up to five digits, generally sequential for that year, assigned by the court and used to keep track of the case, and ZZZ are the presiding judge's initials. AA is a sequential number generated by the court's filing system; bk = "bankruptcy." So 08-bk-00001 (XYZ) would have been the first case filed in 2008 (that five-digit number tells you that) in that court and is presided over by the Hon. X.Y. Zee. This case may also be expressed as 02:08-bk-00001 (XYZ), for example.

If the process DIP number looks like that, then the process DIP number and the case number _MAY_ be the same; if the process DIP number does not look like that then the case number and process DIP numbers are definitely different.

Re: Bankruptcy

The DIP number is used in bankruptcies (Chapter 11 business reorganization or Chapter 7 business liquidation). The number itself is GENERALLY the same as the case number, but check with the court clerk's office to be sure that these numbers are used interchangeably (they probably are).
