Legal Question in Business Law in California
Cricket Wireless charges a fee of $3.00 every time you pay your bill at one of their stores. I have been with several carriers down through the years and have never been charged a fee "simply for the privilege of paying my bill at their stores". (Cricket's response when I asked why I was being charged the $3.00 the first time I paid my Cricket bill at a Cricket store.) I may be wrong, but I do not think that this is fair business practice. Cricket has been doing this for years and I have to wonder the possible merits of a suit against Cricket to make them pay back the unjust (in my opinion) charge they have been faithfully charging their customers lo these many years? Opinion? Advice? Thank you very much. Stephen Brinkley, San Diego.

Why do you think it is unfair? There would need to be a violation of regulations or other laws, and if found, could be a class action. I know of no such law.
This charge does not seem to be a fee for the extension of credit, nor an additional charge for wireless services, so I'd see no illegality so long as you have the option of paying your bill by more conventional means, such as mailing a check, or an on-line transfer from your bank account. Also, I believe that LawGuru's management prefers that questions be anonymous, identifying neither the person asking nor the person or entity with whom they have a problem.
Advice?
Change carriers to one that doesn't charge like that.
Otherwise, pay the amounts due per your contract, which is where you will find these fees disclosed.
Now, if the are NOT disclosed in the contract or policy statements online, then you have grounds to object.
