Legal Question in Business Law in California

Fired for slander

I worked as a waitress for a new business, trained new staff and was fired and replaced by those I trained because the owner's wife thinks there was something of a sexual nature going on between her husband (owner) and I. The owner actually told me that he had to fire me because he was having problems with his wife because she was jealous of me. Recently one of the other waitresses came into my friend's bar saying I was fired for being caught having sex with the owner in his office. The owner's wife is spreading rumors about me that are completely off base. I feel victimized and am wondering if I have any rights to sue.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Re: Fired for slander

You're being slandered. The issue is whether you have suffered damages because of it. You lost your job because of the wife's suspicion, but not because of any rumors. If there are other damages, such as not being able to find another job because of the rumors, then you should think about a lawsuit. Additionally, you may want to think about a wrongful termination action against the owner. Good luck.
