Legal Question in Business Law in California

Good Afternoon, I am a young college student who is in the process of starting a non profit organization. Several of my classmates and I are baffled about the legal aspect of this and would like to know what we should do first. Thank you so much.

There are good books out there at your local bookstore on how to start a non-profit corporation. You'll need to incorporate, create bylaws, elect officers, file for a 501c3 exemption and state exemption, and you should be essentially set.

Fees for the 501c3, if expected amounts receivable are under $10,000, would be $150. Fee to incorporate is $100. I am not sure the fee for state tax exemption off the top of my head.

If you would like an attorney to do this stuff for you, feel free to call me. It is not terribly expensive. Best of luck!

I created a non-profit corporation for the Friends of the San Diego County Foster Parents, and I have helped foster parent associations throughout the State of California create their own non-profits. You will need an attorney to create the non-profit and you will need a CPA to help with the tax forms. If you need help, please feel free to call me at 619-991-0548.
