Can't speak for other states. I am not aware that this would be illegal in California, and in fact public libraries in California used to ask for and hold your drivers' license while you looked at valuable items from the library's closed stacks. I would avoid writing down and keeping any information on the driver's license or making a photocopy of it, and I would advise against ever asking for a Social Security card or number. As I mentioned in an earlier response to a similar inquiry, I think some patrons would be offended by the request, but many would accept it as appropriate in the circumstances. They always have the option of refusing, and then you have the option not to show them anything of high value. Finally, I would advise not employing the practice in a way that could be discriminatory, such as requiring only persons of color to produce their driver's license.
