home owner buys materials

im a contractor under contract on a home remodel. the home owner went and ordered material and purchased items not in the contract and hired another to do the work and says i owe him money.

Why did the homeowner purchase materials directly? To save money? I can only assume the homeowner hired another contractor to do your job, not another trade.

Did they give you grounds as to why they think you owe them money?

I'd need to see your agreement with the homeowner and then discuss some of the above as well as some other details to best tell you what your options are in respect to tis situation.
