Legal Question in Construction Law in California

We won an award against our contractor in the amount of $50,000 for taking full payment and not providing said services. Since the court award we have been unable to collect any monies and the contractor is now living in Costa Rica and we are unable to collect. It has been five years since the award. Can we write off any of this loss on our federal taxes?

This is not a construction law question. It's a tax question. So even with almost 25 years of construction law experience I can't answer your question. You should re-post it as a tax law question, or maybe even ask a CPA or Enrolled Agent.
