Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Past Credit Debts

Dear Sirs:

I have some concerns with my past credit history that have come back to haunt me. I have been continously harassed by a collection agency that is insistent that I pay some credit debt that date back to 1992.

A couple of years ago I tried to pay them back but was unable to keep up the payments on one of the debts.

How long am responsible for these debts? I recently heard in the news of a similar incident and they were being investigated by the government for trying to collect outdated debts.

I need some direction on how to handle this, I'm lost if you can not help me.
