Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Question for you, my friend was fired for giving discounts at his job $50 worth. They made him sign that he would pay the $50 back. However due to having no job and bills to pay he never sent a payment. Now he recieved a collection notice to pay $450. He doesn't want anymore trouble but the contract he signed said $50. Should he sent the $50 to the company. Or should he pay more than what he was fired for? Thank you for any help you're able to provide.

He should contact the collection agency and request proof of the claim.
