summons

I am being sued by Capital One, for 9383.81. I just recieved a summons what do I do? The summons says I have 30 days to file a written responce....Waht is this all about, do I need a lawyer?

Depends. You may need a lawyer if the debt is more than 4 years old, you have some other legal defense, or if your debt situation is such that you might want to consider a Chapter 7 or a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If the debt is legitimate and you were advised by a bankruptcy lawyer that bankruptcy is not for you, your only option is probably to attempt to negotiate a lump sum payment with the creditor.
