Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was out bar hopping with some friends, When the cops show up and say that somebody saw a gun on one of my friends. They search us all for a gun but they did not find one. But they found cocaine on one of my friends and charged him for that. Can they do that they where not looking for drugs when they stopped us?

If they have a reasonable basis to search someone and in the search find something else that is illegal, that is an acceptable search and the person can be arrested for the drugs.
