Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

my son was arrested december 28th for having a loaded fireaem in the car. there was another male in the car (the driver) when the police pulled them over. The officer asked the driver to get out he stated if there is anything in the back it belongs to the passenger. Well upon searching the car the poilice find the gun. Well, today December 30th a public defender told my son (19) he should just take the deal. They gave him 4.5 months. Did all this happen to fast? Is there anything I can do to help him or will he be in the county jail for the whole time. He goes back to court January 15th. and i was confused as to why. They said sentencing. Does that mean he will get more time.

If he signed a deal for a specific sentence, that's what he will get at the time of sentencing.

Yes, that was a fairly quick plea & resolution. Was it too fast? I can't say. It may have been a good deal if more serious charges could have been filed.
