There are several charges which a person caught bringing drugs or a phone into a jail facility can be charged with.

The obvious are:

1. Possession of a controlled substance

2. Possession with intent to distribute

2. Bringing contraband into a penal institution

There was a case out of Chicago where a county clerk smuggled just a phone and was being held on $100,000.00 bond.

Generally an offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor, however because it was committed by an employee or a volunteer of the correctional facility, the offense is a Class B misdemeanor.

Coupled with a possession charge, the multiplier will probably bump the charges to multiple count felonies.

These are very severe charges your friend faces on top of the administrative and job related sanctions. Without reviewing the facts and documents related to this matter I cannot give you competent legal counsel. I recommend you seek counsel immediately.
