Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Best sources for common entertainment contracts

I'm a new personal manager and manage actors/models and would like to know if it is better to consult an attorney to obtain a well written artist management contract, and other common entertainment contracts, or is there some other avenue to obtain good contacts for this industry? I would want the contracts to stand up world wide as much as possible.

There are some good books that contain contracts for amateurs' self-use, but if this is your business you should have an attorney draw up agreements. Also, you should be aware that California law restricts a manager's activities and, generally speaking, a manager may not negotiate an employment contract on behalf of a client.

Although there are many sources of contracts, ie music books, industry books, etc., they are somewhat canned contracts and may not cover the specific things needed for your situation. Further, the interpetation and use of words is important. It is always best to consult with an attorney, especially if you want these contracts to be valid worldwide. While there is cost to consult and have them review and draft, it may save you thousands later down the road if the situation arises in which you have to litigate in regards to one of the contracts.
