Legal Question in Family Law in California

CA vallidity of Dominican Divorce

Helping a friend with Dominican Divorce, no kids, no property, both parties are willing to sign, plan on using law firm recommended on US Embassy in Dominican Republic. Question: What effect does the ''Uniform Divorce Recognition Act'' in California have on a Dominican Divorce? I just wanted to make sure that my friend can register the decree in the place where the marriage itself was originally registered.

Re: CA vallidity of Dominican Divorce

Your friend must meet the residence requirements of a Dominican court. This is a dangerous plan. It is so much easier to obtain a California dissolution and wait the required six months. It is possible that the out of country divorce might no be recognized by a government agency such as social security. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
