Legal Question in Family Law in California

I need a family law attorney in California or New York to handle my divorce. We live in different states and have been living apart for over a year. We have one child that lives with me full time and I will continue to have custody. I believe it will be very amicable and straight forward as we have agreed on everything. Please let me know the easiest way to proceed, let me know the process, what you charge (expect the cost to be) and the time frame. Thank you in advance.

If you are agreed on pretty much everything, you probably do not need a lawyer to represent you. Because the child lives with you in California full time, California has jurisdiction over the case. So you will file in California in the county in which you live, which appears to be Los Angeles. I suggest you pick up a copy of "How to Do Your Own Divorce In California" by Nolo Press. Most large book sellers, such as B&N usually have a copy on the shelves, or you can order it from B&N, Amazon or directly from Nolo at nolo.com. Look through it, then pay a visit to your nearest L.A. Superior Court Self-Help Resource Center. Info can be found here: http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/familylaw/ui/selfHelp.aspx Most likely between the book and the Self-Help Center, you will be able to complete an uncontested divorce without paying a penny to lawyers. If, however, you feel you need help, many attorneys, including myself, offer "limited scope representation" to assist people who are doing their own divorce but need a little more help than the free services offer. Unless you have unlimited funds, or you find out there will be a battle over some of the issues in the case, there is no reason to get sucked into paying a lawyer to do it all for you.
