Legal Question in Family Law in California

I have been living and working overseas for the U.S. Government. I visited my wife in California, and when I was leaving for the airport I was delivered a summons noting that she is requesting legal separation. I am a resident of Virginia. First, is there any legal action I can take in Virginia or do I have to respond in California courts? Second, it said I have 30 days to respond, but I will be overseas. Can I request a delay in court proceedings?

By being served while you were physically present in California, California courts now have jurisdiction over you. You may want to stipulate with your wife for an extension of time to respond.
