Legal Question in Family Law in California

I was married in a ceramony of 200 people 5-28-00, but my husband said we didn't need a marriage liscence. we later went to the court in 12/06 and got a liscense when he went to sudan, but had no ceremony. All our family and guests believed we were legally married in 2000. We have 5 boys and am now seeking a divorce. was my marriage valid in 2000 and am I allowed spousal support since then. We actually had 2 children and lived together since 1997 before the acutal ceremony. I am getting conflicting answers form that attorney's I have conslted and I need an attorney to represent me. thank you for your assistance, Marie

I would suggest that you set up an appointment with a family law attorney, who should review Family Code sections 2254 and 2255. You might be considered a putative spouse, and might have to take certain legal steps to determine whether you're entitled to spousal support.

You might contact your county bar association lawyer referral service to find an attorney in your area who practices family law.
