Legal Question in Family Law in California

I recently went to court for a custody/visitation hearing. The father of my son, (we were never married) wanted to change my sons last name to his last name. In court the judge changed my sons name and took out his middle name on his birth certificate. My sons nname is Riley Winter Peck. Now the judge changed it to Riley Peck Derman. How can a judge change my sons name i gave him at birth? and remove his middle name?

How? I am assuming you mean by "how", "how come" or why. If your question is whether the judge has the legal authority to change a child's name, he does, but if your question is why...

hmm, that is a tough one.

I think you got me stumped on this one. Why do the laws say what they do? You got me. Why do our state legislators make stupid laws. Darned if I know. This question is probably not the kind of question a lawyer could intelligently answer. Ask your state legislator. Ask him why, he is the one who makes the laws.
