Legal Question in Family Law in California

My son has lived w/me for the last 6 yrs My ex has custody How do I change this?

I was quite young when I was first divorced from my son's mother. At the time, I signed full custody to her. He is now 11 years old, and has lived with me since he started school(6 Years). How do I start the paper work to change who has legal custody? Do I need a lawyer to start this process and file a claim to receive child support? She has not provided any monetary compensation in over four years. She verbally agreed to take care of his medical coverage, which she has done, but has not been taking him for regular checkups. Is there a risk that she will not let him return to my home if I start this process. I do not want this to interfere with his schooling.

You would file a motion for change of custody. Retaining an attorney to assist you would greatly improve your chance of success. Also start gathering his report cards, and other information regarding how he has been doing in school. Get a list of his friends and after school activities.
