Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

If you go back to your home country but have lived in the United States illegally how does immigration know that you have lived there illegally? My reason is that if you go back voluntarily and then apply for a green card the legal way how would you get a ten year ban?

There are many ways to know or verify this.

Also, you are required to disclose all previous period of living/visiting the USA in your visa application. If you lie, you will be denied a visa.
