Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

I got married with a US citizen in 2001, and left the country to visit my mother 8 month later. several months after i decided to return to US but i wasnt given the permission. I received my conditional Alien # SSN and ID # but my husband to whom i should have returned destroyed the documents since i did not feel secure around and left him before my return back home. He required $20K to help me to reinstate my permanent residency status but i did not have the money nor he wanted to divorce me untll he got the money. But now, he have changed and granted me a divorce which is still in a process. I still have my Alien #, SSN and ID number but i am not sure if i can return back to US after 15 years of abandonment which was not my intention but his. Please advise.
