Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

My friends and I have created a prototype for an after-market car product. We are students so our expenses are limited. Is it typical for start-up automotive companies to get patent protection before selling or even seeking customer feedback for their products?

Yes, it is customary for someone with a unique invention to obtain patent protection before exposing their invention to the public. Patent protects only the first to file for a particular invention--even if several people have independently come up with the same idea. It is not necessary for the patent to be issued (which can take several years), as long as it is "pending." Unfortunately for some young start-ups, the patent filing process can be expensive. You should consult with a patent attorney who can advise you further on the steps you need to take.
