Legal Question in Employment Law in California

On May 20th I was cutting moulding and had an accident with a miter saw that resulted in the amputation of part of my left thumb. That was my 4th day working in that home. The independent contractor I was working for later told me (after the incident) that his contractors license (CSLB #842368) wasn't current and he didn't have any workers compensation insurance. The contractor refused to give me the homeowner's phone number, so I mailed a certified letter on May 25th, explaining the situation and asking them to report the incident with their insurance. Two days ago I received that letter back from the post office (4 weeks later) and was told that the homeowner refused to claim it. I'm only receiving $14.29/day in SDI benefits and my expected return to work date isn't until Sep. 14th. I'm in desperate need of financial assistance. What, if any, options do I have? Thank you for your time

To start with, hand deliver the letter. You should also talk to a lawyer about suing both the contractor and the homeowner. If the independent contractor was subcontracted to a general contractor, notify them as well, and file a complaint with the CSLB against the person you were working for.
