Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Employer asking for my last day of work, never given formal notice

A few momths ago I gave informal notice, saying I wanted to let them know I was going to look for new employment. A new boss was to start in a week, so I was told to wait and discuss it with them.

We did and they had asked for me to give them time to work tings out, I agreed. A month later, on a hectic day I made a remark that I was glad I wouldn't be here too much longer. Nothing was said for a month, things had changed and I sent an email stating I was not looking for employment and would give them time as asked. I also asked them to let me know if they wanted me to leave. A month later, they tell me a replacement will be here in a week but would give me time to find a position. A week later they want to know my last date of work, today.

What is the best way to handle this?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide, I appreciate it.

It sounds as though your employment is an "at-will" relationship, which means that either party may terminate the relationship at their will. Unless you have a written or verbal contract which guarantees employment for a specified period of time, or can only be terminated under limited conditions, your employer has the right to end your employment. You had previously expressed your deisire to seek employment elsewhere, and even though you changed your mind, your employer has probably lost confidence in your dedication to remain for the long term. Unless there is some other illegal reason motivating their decision, or a contract has been broken, they have the right to say goodbye.
