can my employer as for a doctor's excuse for the first day absent?

The employer can ask for anything they like, subject only to very limited exceptions regarding 'politically correct' medical privacy such as AIDS, etc. Remember, unless you are in a union or under a written employment contract, you are an 'at will' employee that can be fired at any time for any reason. Keep the employer happy if you want to keep your job.
