Is it legal to train someone for a job without pay and then not ever give them any work?

If the training benefits the employer, the employee must be paid for it. If you were an at-will employee (no written contract for a set period of time), the employer can let you go at any time for any lawful reason.

No, it is not legal. Training someone for a job for employment means the employer that would benefit from such training has to pay wages.
