Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I work as a night auditor for a certain motel chain here in California. I work 8 hours each shift, I am not given a lunch break or technically I am not even relieved for a break period. I do however take a cigarette break when I can but if a guest comes in I must return back to the lobby and assist them. Is this legal or our the required to either give me a lunch or compensate me for not taking lunch?

There are special wage and hour rules for night staff at motels. Unless the property is so busy that you never get a reasonable time to eat, you do not need to be completely relieved from duties for a full half hour in order for the employer to be in compliance. If you want more specific information, you can look up the relevant industrial wage and hour order on the state labor commission's website.
