Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hello I have a work related question I am so embarrestEd to have to ask for help I have never been in any kind of trouble the 10 years I haved worked for this company but I guess everyone screws up sometimes. I was fired for HIPPA and I am so afraid I will have to go to jail I did not share the info with anyone and al information gathered was either shredded or recycled in the appropriate place. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

I do not know very much about HIPPA but I doubt it imposes any criminal penalties. You need to read through the entire Act and see what sanctions are provided for, including whether you can be fired for the violation you committed. Even if there are any criminal sanctions, this would be a minor white collar crime and few such are prosecuted.

There are no criminal penalties for HIPPA violations. In fact the patient can't even sue over them. The only remedies are based on filing a complaint with HHS.
