Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Old landlord

I rented a house with my Mother in 1980, and moved out in 1992, which I never gave the Landlord anytype of written or verbal notice that I was moving out. My Mother started living with her companion, which the landlord does know he lives there, but has never made up a new rental agreement with his name on it. If my Mother were to pass away would I be held liable for the house? any damage and to have to clean it out? When I ask my mother what to do, she just says oh the landlord knows you dont live here anymore. Is there anything I should still do at this late stage. thanks for your advice.

Re: Old landlord

Yes!

Contact the landlord (in writing) and make it clear that you left 15 years ago, and do not wish to be on the contract. Obviously, keep a copy.

The way it stands now, if Mom dies, or defaults, the landlord will come after you.

Better late, than never!
