Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Hi. I am currently renting at a property that is going through a short sale. I am trying to find a new place to live. The apartments that I have applied for sent over a form for the property management to fill out. They will not give the new place any of my information because I have not given my 30 day notice yet. The current property management is saying it is illegal to give that information since they have not received a 30 day notice, such as if I am a good tenant and so forth. I just want to know if I will be approved to move into the new property and if so, I will at that point give my 30 day notice. Does the current property management have a legal right to withhold my information? I don't even have to be out of here probably for months, but I just don't want the stress of having potential buyers coming into the home while I am still here. And I don't want to give my notice yet until I know I have a place to go.....please help!!

I have no idea where they get the idea that it is illegal to give out information that you have authorized them to give out. On the other hand I know of no law requiring them to give out the information.
