Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

roomate gone array

I had a roomate who just left after living in the house for 5 months. She only took some of her clothes but left all of her funaiture in the house. We signed a year lease. And it turns out she did not pay rent for 4months. I'm I responible for her unpaid rent?

Re: roomate gone array

The landlord is going to look to someone easy to find (You!) to collect the rent.

It is then your job to find her, and collect.

You may be able to sell her furniture for some help, but you have certain legal moves to make before it is considered abandoned property.

You could sue her, get a judgment, and collect, if and when, she has money.

Sorry I can't give you better news, but bottom line is you are responsible.

Unfortunately, yes. Anytime two or more people sign a lease (contract), the landlord may enforce rent payments from one or all parties who signed. However, you may have legal remedies here and assitance alternatives in helping ensure that your rent payments are still made, whether your roommate is around or not. If you would like such prompt legal assistance, with no upfront fees, by our Law Firm to remedy this situation for you, contact us directly this week.
