Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I just got served eviction papers, and need to respond. I am wondering if there is anything I can do, to not be thrown on the streets. Is there a waver fee program?

First, you should consult with a pro bono (free) eviction clinic in your city or county. They often help people in your situation. Also, you should file a responsive pleading within 5 days of service on you of the summons and complaint. Then, you might be in a position to negotiate with the landlord to receive cash for keys -- to avoid further attorney's fees. Also, courts have a fee waiver program if you can't afford the filing fee for your answer.
