Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Are small claims judgments public record?

I'm wondering whether you can find out if an apartment complex has been sued before in small claims or another court, and what the suit and outcome were. I believe a local complex unfairly withheld money from my deposit and I'm trying to find out if there have been prior complaints about this with them.

Re: Are small claims judgments public record?

All such lawsuits are public records. You may go to your local courthouse for access.

The first thing that you should do is find out the name of the owner of the apartment complex. The court records should be listed with him/her/it as a defendant.

Nervertheless, if you think that you were cheated, contact an attorney (like myself) or pursue an action in small claims court.
