i rent a house for $1300 a month.and i had a roommate.the deal was. he worked for me so i helped him out.so i pay the rent and he pays the utility's. things went bad after time and he was not paying the hole bill and worked it up very high during this time i was hurt on a job and lost an eye.now the utility's are off and he is out. the dwp wants the money plus a$750.00 deposit but he doesn't live here and i payed my part .and i am not going to pay for it again the bills were in his name and he was the one that was delinquent.unbeknown to me if i want to put the bills in a different name can they refuse to .as they are now and can they demand the $750.00 deposit from some one that has no late pay history?i can't work and disability does not pay near enough so i have used all my savings and can not pay his bill.i need help can some one tell me where i stand thanks

I am sorry to hear about your loss of an eye. Being disabled is no fun (I am full time in a wheelchair) but life goes on.

Have you talked to anyone at DWP? They may refuse to deal with you, since you hadn't indicated before that you were the responsible party. Call them, and see what you can work out.

You can appeal any adverse decision by them to the Public Utilities Commission (Sacramento), and should do so at once. However, if DWP finds the bills were in your name, and they never heard from you until shutting off service, you may be very disappointed in the result. They are not in business to give out free service.

Contact DWP at once.
