Is it considedered assult if a woman slaps a man with an OPEN hand?

It's a battery, which is often referred to as an assault. Even spitting at someone can constitute a battery.

Under California law this would be a battery, committed by the man against the woman.

Well DUH, a hit is a hit is a hit. It is actually a battery, but may also include an assault if he saw it coming.
