Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

My mother is being personally sued for 500K over a very minor car accident in which she was at fault. And when I say minor I mean there was literally no damage done to the truck she hit. This man is claiming that he wants 250K for his pain/suffering and another 250k in wages lost and medical expenses. Completely ridiculous... My mother is very stressed and doesn't really know what to do. We have contacted her insurance already but I don't think they will handle this completely as this is a personal law suit being filed against her. Any advice?

If she had auto insurance they will handle it up to her policy limits, although if it is as bogus as you say, they will probably defend the lawsuit for her. That is how insurance works. You can't actually sue someone's insurance company. You have to sue or threaten to sue the insured person. The insurance company's duty is to the insured, not the public. Their duty is to defend against claims or settle them on behalf of the insured. If they guy has sued her insurance company the case would be thrown out since the insurance company owes him nothing.
