Legal Question in Product Liability in California

My son bought a truck from a private party yesterday The day of purchase he discovered a timing belt problem that will cost $1,500 to repair. The car has not been registered in his name yet. Can he legally ask for his money back and return the car today?

I would need to know more facts. If the former owner knew of the problem or that something was wrong without knowing exactly what it was, he would have had to tell your son, even if sold "as is". The other person breached the contract so he can demand his money back, but the other person probably will not return the full amount or maybe anything, so you will probably have t sue in Small Claims Court.

Every kid does this exactly once. From now on, he'll have the car checked out by an independent mechanic.
