Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I bought a home and have since found multiple issues, such as leaks and water damage that were painted over and covered up. Signed attestation states that there were no known issues or repairs made. Previous occupant (renter) visited recently and let me know that there were multiple plumbing issues that the owner 'fixed himself'. Former owner is not a plumber. I've spent a lot of money and time on repairs I had no idea were necessary. What recourse do I have?

Sue the seller, in small claims if your losses are less than or equal to $10,000. In regular court if over $10,000.
