Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

i took over the payments on a car for someone because they could not afford it, i have been paying the car for 4 years already and now they want to take it back. He isthreatening to come with the police to take it away what can i do?

If he still has the pink slip it is his car and he could have it towed away. I doubt the police will come as it is purely a civil matter [unless they think their will be violence]. If he s going to take the car, stop making car payments but tell the payee why. You do not mention what the original agreement was so i do not know if you have equitable ownership because it was agreed you got the car or if you were just supposed to be able to drive it while making the payments. Without knowing that I can not say if he can take the car back.

I think Mr. Shers is pretty much right, but without knowing the specifics of your agreement with the registered owner I can't be completely sure whether you need additional, or possibly different, advice. Taking over payments is one thing, taking over possession and acting like the owner is another. What was your understanding with the "owner"? Is it in writing?
