Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Security Deposit

I have recently moved. How long does my former landlord have to return my security deposit? Also, what can he deduct from the deposit? Can he charge me for re-painting and cleaning the carpets?

Re: Security Deposit

Not later than 14 days after you move out the landlord must provide a written statement of damages and costs of repair, and return the unused portion of the security deposit. Check the Eviction Defense Manual by the California Continuing Education of the Bar, CEB, or Nolo press for more information. Small claims court is available if the security deposit is not returned.
