Mental Illness & SSI

I have a 19 year old son recently diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Is he eligible for SSI?

Probably, depending upon his condition. If he is functional with meds he may not be able to qualify. However, most people with Schizophrenia do qualify since it is a Listed Impairment.

First, you need to get a report from his doctor that clearly documents his condition, including diagnosis and prognosis. Also, the doctor should opine as to your son's functional capacity.

Second, take that report along with his clinical records and file an application with the SSA. Make sure you keep copies of everything you submit to SSA.
