How was the first one done? Was it handwritten or witnessed? Both will work equally, but it's recommended to have any codicil (changes) done in the same format as the original instrument.

There is no such thing as more legal. You described two different methods of accomplishing the same thing. So long as you follow the proper rules of construction, either method will work.
