Legal Question in Business Law in Colorado

Freelance editing/writing business question

Dear LawGuru,

I would like to begin a freelance editing/writing business, and I have a few questions for you.

1) What are the steps I need to take to make this business legal? For example, what licenses/permits/etc. will I need to get and what kind of tax information should I obtain?

2) I move around a great deal, so how will this impact the legality of my business? Will I need to re-register it in every place I live, or is there a way to set it up to where I don't have to keep re-registering and licensing it?

Thank you so much

Re: Freelance editing/writing business question

If you register a corporation or LLC in Colorado, you may still need to register that corporation in any other state you do business.

You will need a physical address in Colorado, but need not live there full time.

Each county has its own permit requirements, usually based on physical location of an office.

The Colorado Secretary of State requires only a $50 filing fee for Articles of Incorporation and no fee is required by the IRS for obtaining a Tax ID number.

If you want help preparing the forms and filing them, contact me at 970-668-1949.

I charge $500 for the service of preparing and filing the various documents.
